We agree on which CTO-style responsibilities we'll own, and make sure you never have to worry about those again. The responsibilities are grouped into buckets, with a cost of CAD $XYZ per bucket. You might need only one bucket, such as team mentorship, or multiple, depending on your business stage and internal capabilities. Only caveat: If you need all the buckets, you should probably hire a full-time CTO.

  • Zero. Or all of them. Depends how you look at it. We don't sell hours; we sell ownership of a responsibility. If owning your hiring takes us four hours one month and twenty the next, that's our problem, not yours. The deliverable is "the bucket is handled," not "here's where the time went."

  • That's what the fit call is for. We'll push back if you've picked something you don't need, or if you're missing one you do. And once we start, you can add or drop buckets at the end of any month — two weeks' notice, no drama.

  • We'll tell you. Either it's a one-off we can help with on the side, or it's actually a bucket you should add, or it's outside what we do and we'll point you to someone who handles it. We won't quietly redefine "Architecture" so we can charge you for a hiring question.

  • You should — eventually. If you have enough sustained CTO-load to justify the seat and the comp to attract someone good. Most founders we talk to have CTO-shaped problems but not a full-time CTO's worth of them. That's the gap this fills. When you cross the line, we'll tell you, and help you hire.

  • Hourly fractional CTOs make you ration. You stop asking because every question costs. Advisors give opinions but don't own anything — the next morning, the problem is still yours. We own the bucket. After our call, the work is ours until it's done.

  • No. Everything we own is proactive and scheduled. If your business needs 2am pager coverage, the right answer is hiring an SRE or setting up an on-call rotation — not a fractional CTO. We'll help you scope that, but we won't do it ourselves.
