Why Sell Software If Anyone Can Make It?
Just a quick thought on the notion that, thanks to AI, everyone will just cook up their own software, hyper-tailored to their own needs, and that, therefore, traditional software companies will all go out of business:
It's not that hard to make yogurt at home. You can tailor the sugar and fat content to your desire, and add any flavour you want. Free from the tyranny of Big Yogurt! Yet somehow, nobody really does that. At least not at any scale that Danone and co have to worry about.
The same goes for so many things, including brewing beer. Baking bread. 3D printing. All great hobbies. All can be taken to the next level by dedicated individuals, too. But none have thoroughly disrupted their respective industries.
New, improved tools elevate what a dedicated individual can pull off. But by extension, they further elevate what a dedicated team can pull off. Especially one whose sole focus is on that product.
So if you're thinking about building and selling software in 2026, don't let the boogeyman of hordes of hobbyists vibe-coding a replacement scare you out of it.
